The Lawrence County Conservation District wanted a better way to address this need and now, that better way is here! Through the kind cooperation of William and Eileen Mayberry, a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency and the hard work of the District staff and cooperating agencies, we are proud to offer the William Mayberry Woodlot Demonstration Area. Here you will see firsthand numerous examples of timber management, conservation practices and other relevant measures to ensure a better way of managing this precious resource.

It is the goal of the Lawrence County Conservation District that the William Mayberry Woodlot Demonstration Area be used to teach proper practices in silviculture treatments, assessing the value and best management of woodlots, erosion control for timber harvesting sites and other treatments and concerns being addressed as interest dictates. Specific silviculture treatments discussed include differentiation of treatments, crop tree release, clear cut with residuals, wildlife habitat considerations, shelterwood, regeneration, tree planting and vernal pools and ponds.

This is an effort to educate owners of woodlots of any size, the young, the educators, special interest groups and professionals in the field that engage in these practices. Proper education, protection, stewardship, conservation and use of a county's resources and environment are necessary to ensure a production environment for future generations.

Demonstrations are by appointment only.

William Mayberry Woodlot Demonstration Area

Through the years, woodlot owners of Lawrence County have shown a concern about how they might wisely manage their woodlots for present and future generations. However, each woodlot needs to be addressed separately and with the assistance of a professional forester. Due to time limitations and harvest schedules, many property owners delayed or simply failed to get the assistance necessary to make good management decisions.
