the environment and the benefit

Organization

Conservation Districts are unique subdivisions of state government that utilize both governmental and private resources to solve conservation problems.  They are the only unit of local government responsible for carrying out programs for the conservation of our natural resources.  Conservation districts exist in all Pennsylvania counties except Philadelphia, and district boundaries follow county lines.

Each conservation district is governed by a board of directors.  These volunteer directors are, by state law, a mix of both farmers and public members and are appointed by the county commissioners.  Nominations for directors are made by county wide organizations approved by the State Conservation Commission.  Conservation districts are guided by the philosophy that decisions concerning conservation problems should be made at the local level by local citizens, as it is they who best understand the local environment.  For this reason, programs may vary considerably from district to district.

The purpose of the Lawrence Conservation District is to recognize local land, water, and related resource problems and to develop programs to attempt to solve them.  The district may be assisted in this purpose by public and private sources that can lead assistance to accomplishing the district’s goals.
